Trump vs Iran

The Straits of Hormuz are a very narrow channel between Iran to the north and the UAE and Oman to the south. More than 1/5th of the world’s oil supply transits thru the Straits - more than the entire oil production of the US.

Monday President Trump said - in no uncertain terms - that he would rain down death and destruction if Iran tried to close the Straits.

That has not aged well.

As of 5:30 pm Eastern March 10, traffic was down by 98%…the Straits are effectively closed..except to a handful of Chinese, Iranian, or Russian ships. 400 ships are stuck, unable to move due to Iran’s closure of the Straits.

There’s no precedent for the shutdown, and no one has any idea when it will reopen.

No one, that is, except very high-ranking Iranian officials, who said Tuesday March 10:

they would not allow "one litre of oil" to be shipped ​from the Middle East if U.S. and Israeli attacks continue. "We are the ones who will determine the end of the war," a spokesperson said, according to state media.

So. Here’s where we are.

The American President’s threats and actions have failed to keep the Straits open.

Iran’s new leader Mojtaba Khamenei is a hardened, very conservative Muslim cleric. Khamenei’s father - Iran’s former Supreme Leader, his mother, wife and child were killed by Trump’s initial strikes, and he was wounded.
