Three years ago Jeff Rush of CJPIA, Jill Leonard of LWCC and I presented a session entitled “Rising Temps, Rising Risks: Climate Change & Comp” at National Work Comp.
Maybe a dozen or so folks attended…
Ignoramuses decried this as alarmism, pooh-poohed the very idea of human-caused climate change, and poked fun at Jill, Jeff and I for attempting to alert the industry to the consequences of global warming.
I’ve written about these consequences multiple times, focusing on the science behind climate and implications for workers’ comp. Which include:
lost WC premium dollars,
the impact of heat,
NCCI and WCRI research showing hotter temps drive more claims
WCRI’s leadership in researching potential impact of heat on workers’ comp, and
the dozens of workers killed by heat exposure every year.
After years of yelling into the void, here we are.
The cost in dollars of human-caused climate change is rising faster than flood waters in (insert name of many states).
Just as the stuff is hitting the fan, the Trump Administration has halted reporting on disaster events.
What does this mean for you?
Willful ignorance is a increasingly costly strategy.
