Imagine this scenario: Your 79 y/o mom has significant dementia, can’t toilet herself so needs to be wiped every time she pees and poops, and sheets changed constantly. She can’t feed herself, can’t walk safely, so needs to be monitored so she doesn’t fall, and assisted getting in and out of a wheelchair, might be on oxygen (which has to be monitored and changed out when it’s empty)—anyway, if she doesn’t die after 36 months in a nursing home (skilled nursing facility is the correct terminology), she will need to come live with her adult kids! Now THEY get to provide 24-7 care, so of course, they can’t work (don't get much sleep), and have no time for their own kids or themselves. Of course they have to find room for her in their house or apt, so maybe the living room is now “Grandma’s room." And god forbid they have kids that have special needs (as if normal, healthy kids aren’t demanding enough!) If the kids are special needs kids, now this adult care-giver will be caring for both HER disabled mom with dementia, AND her special needs kid, who ran out of their lifetime benefits. And if this care-giver runs off or dies, I have no idea who will care for those needy folks. Will they end up in a hospital, which will have to bear the cost without reimbursement? How long before the hospital closes due to inability to make their budget? Then where will our disabled grandma and child end up? This sort of stuff keeps me from sleeping.

Yes.

So much for "be your brother's/mother's/sister's/father's keeper"

"disabled people unable to work who no longer have healthcare and are forced to live on the street" -- let us not forget that the Supreme Court just criminalized homelessness, which means these fellow US citizens and neighbors will now face more fines, tickets, and/or arrest even if there is no adequate shelter available. It's a creation of a permanent underclass that we only escape by luck and time. Disability is almost a guarantee if you live long enough.

Thanks Sharon - I'll do my best to continue to earn your readership.

At the end of the day, the choice is between a dictatorship enabled by the Supreme Court or democracy. Personally I'd much prefer if Biden stepped aside as the 100,000 voters who will decide this election will be overly influenced by the right wing hate machine and not by the facts.

I love Biden, he's been a very successful President and is an honorable person. My opinion is other candidates would have a better chance to strop Trump - regardless I'll work hard to support whoever is the Dem candidate - as we all should.

be well and keep working!

Joe
